Manon Lescaut, shown in October last year, became Placido Domingo’s debut as a conductor at the Bolshoi. It paved the way to the collaboration of maestro with our theatre, and it promises to be a fruitful one. Besides La Bohème, such performances as Don Carlo and La Traviata are included in the 245th programme of the anniversary season as well, where established master of opera stage will perform leading baritone parts.
For twenty-nine years, Placido Domingo performed a part of Rodolfo in La Bohème. After successful debut in Mexico in 1962, he sang it in Tel-Aviv, San Francisco, Boston and Los Angeles, at The Bavarian State Opera and Royal Opera Covent Garden, Paris National Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Gran Teatro del Liceo and many other opera houses – everywhere with a triumphant success. His partners as Mimi were the famous opera singers of XX Century: Irma Gonzalez, Renata Tebaldi, Mirella Freni, Montserrat Caballe, Katia Ricciarelli, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ileana Cotrubaș…
When Mr Domingo vigorously stepped onto the path as conductor, he ‘did not forget’, of course, about one of the beloved and meaningful names for his artistic career. He first conducted La Bohème at Metropolitan in 1984. This debut was so successful that the administration of the theatre offered maestro to carry on with all shows of La Bohème, which had been planned for that season. In addition, many of the theatres where he sang as Rodolfo invited him after to conduct La Bohème.
