Bolshoi and Plácido Domingo: Life in Opera

24.10.2020

Plácido Domingo already sang at the Bolshoi once. However, it was almost half a century ago, and it was not Bolshoi’s performance. La Scala was touring in Moscow in 1974 (it was a historical tour which became a legend). Young Domingo performed part of Cavaradossi in Tosca by G.Puccini.

In our recent history - 2011 - there was a rather curious episode, an “acoustics test”, which Domingo made on our renovated and revamped stage. At the same time when reconstruction of historical building had been completed at the Bolshoi, there was well known competition Operalia happening in Moscow. Maestro, who was invited to check fruits of construction workers and restorers’ labor, passed through the hall, went onstage... and suddenly sang aria of Hermann from The Queen of Spades (to perform it at the Bolshoi had remained his unaccomplished dream). Bolshoi as well, of course, could only dream about such a collaboration!

Finally, during summer 2018, Domingo quite officially performed on Historical stage at the Gala concert dedicated to the Football World Championship.

Current concert assembled a team of prominent singers from around the world, including those, who will be singing at the Bolshoi for the first time. You will hear arias and ensembles from classical opera repertoire. Plácido Domingo picked Verdi and Puccini – composers, who have been accompanying him all his life, which he devoted to opera.

Bolshoi will host for the first time such stars as Michael Volle and Piotr Beczala. Certainly, winners of Operalia Opera Competition, which was founded by maestro in 1993, will be performing too. That includes Pretty Yende, South African operatic soprano who became widely famous in the world and well familiar to Moscow music lovers, winner of 2011 (she performed in Moscow three times). There also will be soprano from Sweden Kristina Nilsson and Spanish tenor Xabier Anduaga.
Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov and Ildar Abdrazakov, who performed at the opening of our season in Don Carlo, will arrive once again to join those who cannot imagine their life without opera.
