The main idea behind Reflections is to unite in one production Moscow Academy of Choreography-trained ballerinas and give them the opportunity of working with the best contemporary choreographers whose interests lie very far apart (from modernism to the neoclassics). World premiere pieces will be created for this dance event by famed choreographers Mauro Bigonzetti (Italy), Renato Zanella (Italy), Karole Armitage (USA), Lucinda Childs (USA) and Yuri Possokhov (USA). The program also features works by Nacho Duato (Spain), Iorma Elo (Finland) and George Balanchine. Reflections is an evening of ballet in 3 parts. Part 1 will feature Nacho Duato’s Remansos (ballet for 3 pairs of dancers to piano music by Enrique Granados). In Part 2, the dancers taking part will perform numbers created specially for them. This part of the program will be brought to an end with a performance of George Balanchine’s famous Pas de Trois to music by Glinka. Part 3 will consist of Mauro Bigonzetti’s Cinque to popular and ethnic music, a work for five ballerinas personifying five continents.
From August-September 2010, all participants in the co-production will undergo intensive, daily rehearsals of the first and third parts of the program at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, California. Then, for several months, the ballerinas will work with the choreographers to an individual timetable. From 10 January 2011, stage rehearsals will start at Segerstrom Hall, Orange County Center for the Performing Arts, where the world premiere of Reflections will be held on 20, 21, 22 and 23 January 2011.
After the Moscow premiere of Reflections (27,28,29 and 30 January 2011- Bolshoi Theatre New Stage), the work will eventually enter the Bolshoi Theatre repertoire (in accordance with licensed agreement).
The initiator of this unique ballet evening is producer Sergei Danilyan (Ardani Artists) who was responsible for the sensationally successful (already in several series) parallel male Kings of Dance project. The Moscow Kings of Dance (lst series) premiere likewise took place at the Bolshoi Theatre New Stage with the participation of the Company’s principal dancers.
