The Bolshoi Ballet has taken a record high: the number of viewers who have watched its performances on the big screen has surpassed the million mark!
This record was established on 26 October when one of the first night performances of Grigorovich’s new version of his ballet Legend of Love was relayed live from the Bolshoi Theatre.
The Bolshoi Ballet on the Big Screen project started off in March 2010 when a ‘pilot’ relay of the ballet The Flames of Paris was shown in 150 (mainly French) movie theatres.
The 2nd ballet to be relayed — Nutcracker — was seen in 375 cinemas throughout Europe, and also in the States, Japan and Australia. Now, four years later, comes the Bolshoi’s last (timewise) live relay: Legend of Love has already been shown at 1200 movie theatres in fifty countries worldwide.
In mid 2013 movie theatres in many Russian cities (their number is continually raising) and in several cities in Kazakhstan were included in The Bolshoi Ballet on the Big Screen project.
Since the project was initiated a total of 19 Bolshoi Theatre Ballet productions have been filmed and shown on the Big Screen.
The following ballets are favorites with movie theatre audiences: Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, Don Quixote and Jewels.
Here is our list for the TOP 5:
Nutcracker — 150 000 attendance (one live satellite broadcast and two recorded showings)
The Sleeping Beauty — 140 000 attendance (one live satellite broadcast and one recorded showing)
Le Corsaire — 80 000 (one live satellite broadcast and one recorded showing)
