Martin Muehle

Biography

German-Brazilian tenor Martin Muehle was born in Porto Alegre in Brazil and studied at the Musikhochschule in Lübeck, Germany. He has been praised for his vocal prowess and dramatic intensity on stage in some of the most challenging tenor roles.

He opens the 2018-19 season with his return to Oper Köln as Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot and gives his US and house debut at Seattle Opera as Manrico in Verdi’s Il Trovatore.

In the 2017-18 season Mr. Muehle made his role and house debut at Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Maurizio in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur opposite Angela Gheorgiu and conducted by Daniel Oren. He also gave his role debut as Manrico in a new production of Il Trovatore at Konzert Theater Bern. He returned to the Nationaltheater Mannheim as Calaf in Turandot and then gave his house debut at Teatro Petruzelli in Bari in the title role of Andrea Chénier. He ended the season with three productions of a signature role, Don José in Carmen, at the National Theatre in Prague, Konzert Theater Bern and the Bregenz Festival in summer 2018.

Mr. Muehle’s 2016-17 season included a number of important role and house debuts. The season started with his much anticipated role debut singing the title role in Wagner’s Lohengrin in a new production by Vincent Boussard at Theater St. Gallen, with further performances of the role at the Nationaltheater Mannheim conducted by Alexander Soddy. He debuted as Calaf in a new production of Turandot at Oper Köln and in a revival at Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, while audiences at the Deutsche Oper Berlin heard him for the first time as fiery Andrea Chénier. He ended the season with his debut at the Bregenz Festival in summer 2017 as Don José in a new production of Carmen directed by Kasper Holten and conducted by Paolo Carignani.

The 2015-16 season included his role debut as Des Grieux in a new production of Puccini‘s Manon Lescaut in São Paolo, his house debut at Oper Graz as Don José in Carmen and a return to Theater Freiburg as Faust in Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele, as well as returns to the Nationaltheater Mannheim as Fritz in Schreker’s Der ferne Klang conducted by Dan Ettinger, and to Theater St. Gallen as Pollione in Bellini’s Norma. He also sang his first performances as Luigi in Puccini’s Il tabarro at Theater Bielefeld.

Martin Muehle was a member of the ensemble of the Nationaltheater Mannheim from 2013 to 2015, where he appeared as Hagenbach in Catalani’s La Wally, Faust in Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, Gabriele Adorno in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, in Puccini roles such as Calaf in Turandot and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, as Don José and in the title role in a new production of Verdi‘s Stiffelio. Other highlights of recent seasons included Don José in Carmen at Theater St. Gallen, Radames at the St. Margarethen Opera Festival in a new production of Verdi’s Aida, Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walküre at Theater Detmold and in concert with the Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Zagreb, as well as Arrigo in Verdi’s I Vespri Siciliani at Theater Freiburg. He is also featured on the critically acclaimed Naxos recording of Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini in the role of Paolo il bello with the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg under Fabrice Bollon.

In South America Martin Muehle made a name for himself singing roles like Don José in Carmen in Brasilia and Buenos Aires, Turiddu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana in Brasilia, Siegmund in Die Walküre in La Plata and at Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, where he also sang Alfonso in Korngold’s Violanta and Guido in Zemlinsky’s Eine florentinische Tragödie.

In concert, Mr. Muehle has sung Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Cathedral of Porto Alegre and at Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte, as well as Mahler´s Das Lied von der Erde at the Teatro Nacional in Brasilia. Recently he also celebrated successes with Das Lied von der Erde conducted by Dan Ettinger in Mannheim and Ludwigsburg, and in his debuts at the Berliner Philharmonie as tenor soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester and Rundfunkchor Berlin under the baton of Simon Halsey and at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig with the MDR Symphony.
