Biography

Ms. Hulcup received her earliest musical training and a BMus. degree as a violinist. She was in a string quartet that won a scholarship to the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada and then worked as a casual player in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

She sang with the West Australian Opera Chorus and in their Young Artists programme before winning two Opera Foundation Australia scholarships; the Covent Garden National Opera Studio Award and the Vienna State Opera Award. Following her MMus degree in voice at the Victorian College of the Arts, Ms. Hulcup trained at the National Opera Studio in London with distinguished voice teacher Janice Chapman who remains her coach.

Ms. Hulcup has appeared at leading opera houses internationally, including Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Royal Opera House London, Bayerisches Staatsoper, Teatro Real Madrid, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Scottish Opera, La Monnaie Brussels and Palau de les Arts Valencia.

She debuted at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2004 as Enriquetta (I Puritani). Her earlier roles also included Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Hansel (Hansel and Gretel). Her performances of the title role in Handel’s Ariodante at both the Barbican in London and Teatro Real in Madrid, with Les Talens Lyriques brought strong critical acclaim. She was subsequently invited to sing the role at the Händel Festspiel, Opernhaus Halle, the Bayerisches Staatsoper in Munich and at Theatre an der Wien.

Ms. Hulcup has sung Meg Page (Falstaff) for Theatre des Champs Elysees with Daniele Gatti, and Diana/Il Destino (La Calisto) at La Monnaie in Brussels under René Jacobs. She performed Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Venezuela under Gustavo Dudamel and at the 2009 BBC Proms. In the same year she also appeared at the Royal Opera House London in the role of Arbaces (Artaxerses) with Ian Page. For the season 2010-11 she was a company member of the Wiener Staatsoper, singing Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte).

In 2011 sang Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor and Coronation Mass with Jeremie Rhorer as well as the title role in Vivaldi’s Griselda in Sydney for early music group Pinchgut Opera. In 2012 she performed in two newly staged productions, singing the role of Donna Elvira in Valencia and Octavian, Der Rosenkavalier in Florence, both with maestro Zubin Mehta.

In 2013 she sang the role of Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Bolshoi Theatre.
