Biography

After initial studies at Lithuania’s Academy of Music and Theatre, Justina Gringyte joined the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and London’s National Opera Studio. She is a former Samling Scholar and was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. She studies with Buddug Verona James.

For the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, her roles have included Flora (La traviata), Third Nymph (Rusalka), Maddalena (Rigoletto) in the Plácido Domingo Gala, Third Innocent (Minotaur), Albina (La donna del lago), Maddalena (Il viaggio a Reims), and Suzy (La rondine).

In 2013/14, Justina maked house debuts with English National Opera as Maddalena (Rigoletto) in a new production by Christopher Alden, and with Welsh National Opera as Fenena (Nabucco).

Highlights from the 2014/15 season include Carmen for English National Opera, Maddalena in Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House in London, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel for Vilnius City Opera.

In the 2015/16 season Ms Gringyte debuted at Teatro Real in Madrid as Maddalena in Rigoletto and sang Carmen at the Scottish Opera, Lithuanian National Opera and Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.

On the concert platform most recent highlights are semi-staged performances of Carmen in Moscow and St. Petersburg and Olga in Eugene Onegin, conducted by Mikhail Simonyan, a recital of Rachmaninov songs with Julius Drake in Antwerp, a Wigmore Hall recital with Iain Burnside, Kaled in Le Roi de Lahore and Dulcinee in Don Quichotte with Chelsea Opera Group under the baton of Renato Balsadonna; Verdi's Requiem with the Simón Bolívar Orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel; Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra and Dvořák's Stabat Mater with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra under Gintaras Rinkevicius at the Pažaislis Music Festival.

With Iain Burnside she has recorded Rachmaninov songs for the Delphian label.

Justina has been awarded the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medal and the Llais Llanbed Award, and was a finalist in the Stuart Burrows International Voice Competition. She is 2015 International Opera Awards Young Singer of the Year.

In 2014 she took part in the Bolshoi Theatre production of Rigoletto, singing the role of Maddalena (conductor Evelino Pidò, director Robert Carsen). In 2016 she sang the role of Marguerite in premiere performances of La Damnation de Faust (conductor Tugan Sokhiev, director Peter Stein).
