Awards

Awards include the golden medal of the Prague Quadrennial in 1971 and its Golden Triga in 1975, Russian State Prize in 1998, membership in the Russian Academy of Arts in 2001, the President of Russia Prize in 2002, the International Stanislavsky Award in 2004 and two posthumous awards: the Chrystal Turandot in 2006 for The Eclipse staged at Lenkom Theatre and the Golden Mask in 2007 as the best drama designer.

Biography

In 1947-1950 studied at the Kiev Art College. Employed as a painter in professional theatres of Kiev since the age of 15. In 1956-1967 worked as set designer at the Kiev Russian Drama Theatre named after Lesya Ukrainka. In 1967-1968 held a position of chief artist at the Moscow Drama Theatre named after Konstantin Stanislavsky. Since 1969 designed the productions of the Moscow Drama Theatre at Taganka directed by Yuri Lyubimov (in 1973-1984 held a position of the chief artist there). Most significant works include Mother after Maxim Gorky, Rush Hour by Jerzy Stawiński, The Dawns Here are Quiet after Boris Vasiliev’s story, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, The Exchange after Yuri Trifinov’s story, The Master and Margarita after Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel, Crime and Punishment after Dostoyevsky’s novel, The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman and Euripides’s Medea. Borovsky also worked in other Moscow houses, including the Moscow Artistic Theatre (productions of Echelon by Mikhail Roshchin, Ivanov by Chekhov etc.), the Maly Drama Theatre, Sovremennik Theatre etc., where he collaborated with directors of different artistic approach: Yuri Lyubimov, Anatoly Efros, Oleg Yefremov, Valery Fokin, Galina Volchek and Lev Dodin. Borovsky designed productions of Italian, German, French, Austrian, American, Greek and other foreign drama and opera houses. His portfolio included over 150 productions.
