Arnold Rutkowski

Biography

Arnold Rutkowski completed his musical studies in Lodz. A winner of several prestigious Vocal Competitions including the Jan Kiepura Vocal Competition, he was awarded the Cultur Arte Prize in the Placido Domingo Competition in 2009. Before graduating from Conservatory, Rutkowski was already invited to make his professional debut in Bornholm, Denmark as Ferrando in a production of Cosi fan tutte, staged by Jonathan Miller. He subsequently joined the ensemble of the Wroclaw Opera where he was heard as the Duke in Rigoletto, Alfredo in La Travata, Rodolfo in La Boheme, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and as Don Jose in Carmen. Rutkowski was invited to make his debut at the Polish National Opera in 2007 as Rodolfo and has returned often to that theater in roles including Stefan in Monciusko’s The Haunted Manor and the Duke in Rigoletto.

Arnold Rutkowski made his German operatic debut in the spring of 2010 as the Duke in Rigoletto in Wiesbaden. In the 2010/2011 season Rutkowski went on to debut at the Berlin State Opera as Alfredo in La Traviata, at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Duesseldorf as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and at the Finnish National Opera as Rodolfo in La Boheme. In July of 2011 he joined Anna Samuil of the Berlin State Opera for a Gala concert at the Bad Kissingen Festival under Marco Letonja. In August of 2011, Rutkowski made his debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm as Rodolfo. These performances were followed by his debuts at the Hamburg State Opera as the Duke in Rigoletto, in Vienna at the Vienna Volksoper in Carmen, and in France as Rodolfo for L’Opera de Toulon. In February of 2012, Rutkowski returned to the Berlin State Opera as Lensky in Eugene Onegin. He subsequently appeared at the Deutsche Opera am Rhein for more performances of Madama Butterfly and as Don Jose in Carmen. In June of 2012, Rutkowski sang Alfredo at the Polish National Opera in Warsaw opposite Alexandra Kurzak and Andrzej Dobber.

In the 2012/2013 season Rutkowski made his debut at the SemperOper Dresden as Rodolfo in La Boheme and later also sang this role for his return to the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. He appeared with the Opera de Toulon as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and made his debut with the Geneva Opera in April 2013 in the same role. In the course of the season Rutkowski was also heard as the Duke in Rigoletto at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Duesseldorf, and as Alfredo in La Traviata in Dresden. In the summer of 2013 Rutkowski made his debut with the Australian Opera, again in La Traviata. Other roles in Rutkowski’s developing repertoire include the title roles in Gounod’s Faust and Romeo et Juliette, Massenet’s Werther, and Gabriele Adorno in Verdi`s Simon Boccanegra.

Arnold Rutkowski began the 2013/2014 season as Don Jose in a new production of Carmen at the SemperOper in Dresden. He also appeared there as Rodolfo in La Boheme and at the Oper Leipzig as the Duke in Rigoletto. He made his Zurich Opera debut as Rodolfo in December of 2013 and subsequently sang his first Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor for his debut at the Opera de Marseille. Rutkowski then made his debut at the Stuttgart Opera in La Boheme in June of this year.

In the 2014/2015 season Arnold Rutkowski appeared at the Geneva Opera as the Duke in Rigoletto and at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg as Manrico in Dmitry Tcherniakov’s production of Il Trovatore.

In 2015 he made his Bolshoi Theatre debut as Alfredo (La Traviata).

Among his recent engagements: Pinkerton (Madama Batterfly), Alfred (La Traviata) at the Stuttgart Opera, Manrico (Il Trovatore) at the Lithuanian National Opera, Vaudémont (Iolanta) at the Opéra National de Paris and Opéra National de Lyon, Stefan (Straszny dwór) and Kirkor (Goplana) at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, Don Jose (Carmen) at the SemperOper Dresden.
