Alexander Arefiev

Biography

Studied at the Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute (Faculty of Painting, Mikhail Kurilko-Ryumin’s workshop).
In 2006 graduated from the Russian University of Theatre Arts (GITIS) (Faculty of Scenography, Sergey Barkhin’s workshop).

Works in both musical and drama theatre. Among his scenic productions are: E. Kálmán’s Gräfin Mariza (scenography and costumes, 2006) at the Orenburg Theatre of Musical Comedy; Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine the Great (scenography and costumes, 2d prize for scenic design) at the «Kunst — Art — Performance» art competition festival, 2006, held by the Embassy of Germany and the All-Russian Theatrical Society; S. Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd (scenography and costumes, 2007) at the Student’s Stage of GITIS; V. Kobekin’s Margarita (scenography and costumes, 2007) at the Saratov Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre; Walpurgis Night from Gounod’s Faust (scenography and costumes, 2008) at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre; Gozzi’s Turandot (scenography and costumes, 2008) at the Kaliningrad Regional Musical Theatre; N. Strelnikov’s Parisienne (scenography, 2009) at the Dnepropetrovsk Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre; E. Podgaits’ Angel and Psychotherapist (scenography, 2011; as a part of the Open Stage project) at the Pokrovsky Moscow Chamber Musical Theatre; M. Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges (scenography, 2012) at the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow; Songs at the Well and The Blind Ones by E. Langer and L. Auerbach (scenography, 2012; as a part of the Laboratory of Modern Opera project) the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre; Stravinsky’s Mavra and Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio (scenography, 2013) at the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre; P. Valtinoni’s Pinocchio (scenography, 2013) at the Pokrovsky Moscow Chamber Musical Theatre; Sasha Denisova’s Sforza (scenography, 2014) at the Meyerhold Theatre Centre.

His works for television include directing the TV series School №1 (STS, 2006), docudramas Peter and Fevronia (“Ostrov” studio for Channel One, 2008) and Gogol. The Farewell Story (“Ostrov” studio for VGTRK “Culture”, 2009); TV series Two Antons (TNT, 2010) and Dads (Channel One, “Inter”, 2011); feature film Solid Marriage (“Amedia” for Russia-1, “Inter”, 2012); TV series Bones (Good Story Media, 2013); feature film Carnival Our Style (Russia-1, “Inter”, 2013); teleshows One Against All (“Carousel” channel, 2013-14) and Model Lesson (RTVi, 2013-14); reality show Measured People (WeiT Media for STS, 2014); TV series Londongrad (Sputnik Vostok Production for STS, 2014).
