Elena Kopunova

Biography

Graduate of the Moscow Theatre Art and Technical College. Works in the Bolshoi Theatre as a lighting designer, creating stage lighting for concerts, opera and ballet productions.

Among her projects were Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony (2012, choreographed by Yuri Posokhov) and Britten’s The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (2013, directed by Igor Ushakov). Directed the lighting design adaptation for the production of the ballet Apollon Musagète, music by Igor Stravinsky (choreography by George Balanchine, lighting concept by Ronald Bates).

As a lighting technician worked in such ballet productions as: Løvenskiold’s La Sylphide (staged by Johan Kobborg, 2008); the Grand Pas from the ballet Paquita by L. Minkus (staged by Yuri Burlaka, 2008); L. Desyatnikov’s The Russian Seasons (choreography by Alexey Ratmansky, 2008); L. Delibes’ Coppelia (staged by Sergey Vikharev, 2009); Le Jeune Homme et la Mort, music by J. S. Bach (choreography by Roland Petit, 2010); L. Garnier’s Suivront mille ans de calme (choreography by Angelin Preljocaj, 2010); J. Talbot’s and J. White’s Chroma (choreography by Wayne McGregor, 2011); The Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky (choreography by Jiří Kylián, 2011); Dream of dream, music by S. Rakhmaninov (choreography by Jorma Elo, 2012); Hamlet, music by D. Shostakovich (choreographed by Radu Poklitaru, directed by Declan Donnellan, 2015); opera productions such as: Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades (production by Valey Fokin, 2007); Bizet’s Carmen (production by David Pountney, 2008); Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila (production by Dmitri Tcherniakov, 2011).

Took part in international projects Kings of the Dance and Reflections, worked with the Nederlands Dans Theater, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, American Ballet Theatre and other ballet companies on tour at the Bolshoi.
Worked with the Bolshoi Theatre company on tour in Russia and abroad.

Took part in the international project Kremlin Gala – Ballet stars of the 21st century and numerous other opera and ballet festivals. Collaborated with private Russian ballet companies.

As a guest lighting designer worked in the theatres of Voronezh, Krasnoyarsk, Minsk, Samara, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Astrakhan and other Russian cities.
Collaborated with such choreographers as Vladimir Vasiliev, Georgy Kovtun, Nikolai Androsov, Larissa Alexandrova, Sergey Bobrov, Yuri Posokhov, Konstantin Uralsky.

Among her recent works: Grand Pas from the ballet Paquita by L. Minkus (staged by Yuri Burlaka, 2009) at the Chelyabinsk Opera and Ballet Theatre; The Queen of Spades (production by Sergey Bobrov and Yuliana Malhasyants, 2009) at the Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre; Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (choreography by Sergey Bobrov, 2010) and The Red Poppy (choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev, 2010) at the Buryat State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre; Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer (production by Hans-Joachim Frey, 2012) at the Irkutsk Musical Theatre; Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (K. Uralsky’s version, 2012), Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet (choreography by Konstantin Uralsky, 2013), Waltz of White Orchids, music by M. Ravel (choreography by Konstantin Uralsky, 2013), Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker (choreography by Konstantin Uralsky, 2013), Minkus’ Don Quixote (production by Konstantin Uralsky, 2014) at the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theatre; Der fliegende Holländer (production by Hans-Joachim Frey, 2013) at the Belarus Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre – the production received the National Theatre Award of the Republic of Belarus; V. Gavrilin’s Anyuta (choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev, 2015) at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Among her works in the drama theatre is A. Zvyagintsev’s The Last Idol (the Moscow Maly Theatre, directed by Vladimir Dragunov, 2013).
