Biography
Born in Leningrad. Graduated from the stage direction faculty of the Saint-Petersburg Academy of Theatrical Art, specializing in theatre set design.
Has worked as a lighting designer on over 300 music and drama productions in Russia and abroad. Has created the lighting for numerous show programmes and light and pyrotechnic shows.
He’s a member of the Union of Theatre Workers of Russia and the All-Russian Association of Lighting Designers.
Over the years, he has worked as principal lighting designer with the Saint-Petersburg Theatre of Youth Art, the Saint-Petersburg Bryantsev Young Spectators’ Theatre, the Saint-Petersburg Drama and Comedy Theatre on Liteiny and the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre.
In 1996, together with Yevgeny Ginsburg, he established the creative workshop Lighting for Theatre.
Collaborates with the Opéra National de Paris, La Scala Theatre (Milan), Metropolitan Opera (New York), Teatro Real (Madrid), English National Opera (London), Berlin State Opera, Bavarian State Opera (Munich), Wiener Staatsoper, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (Brussels), Opéra de Lyon, Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper (Berlin), Dutch National Opera (Amsterdam), Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Zurich Opera, Latvian National Opera, Salzburg Opera Festival and Aix-en-Provence Festival.
