Olga Smirnova, Semyon Chudin. Ekaterina Krysanova, Vyacheslav Lopatin. Lincoln Center Festival will celebrate the 50th anniversary of George Balanchine’s iconic ballet Jewels. At each performance (there are only five) three parts of this ballet will be presented by three different ballet companies. One of the participants is the Bolshoi Ballet, two others are New York City Ballet and Paris Opéra Ballet. This project embodies the expression ‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’ – the idea is as brilliant, so obvious. A native of Russia, brought up in the traditions of the Russian Imperial Ballet, Balanchine worked for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, which had an enormous influence on the development of dance in Europe, particularly in France, where he premiered many of his famous ballets and where in the late 1940s, already being an American, he replaced the retired ballet master of the Paris Opera Ballet, for which he transferred his productions and choreographed a performance that reflected his admiration for the French ballet school and style. Developing Russian traditions, he created his own unique style, a great troupe (NYCB) and became a choreographer of essential significance for American ballet. The peculiarities of Balanchine's three main countries’ ballet schools were reflected in three parts of his Jewels. Emeralds, to the music of Gabriel Fauré, pay tribute to the French elegant style; in Rubies, to the music of Igor Stravinsky, another descendant from Russia who glorified the USA, the sharp syncopated rhythms hold sway, and Diamonds, to the music of Tchaikovsky, are a metaphor for splendour of Imperial Russian classical ballet. It's natural, that on opening night of the Lincoln Center Festival, the Paris Opéra Ballet will dance Emeralds, NYCB will do Rubies, and the Bolshoi will perform Diamonds. However, another intrigue is launched: on two performances NYCB and Bolshoi will alternate between the second and third acts. Competitiveness will give an additional impulse to the performance. It is no coincidence that the festival's leaders approached the celebration of this ballet so creatively and seriously. It is no coincidence that the Festival honors the anniversary of this ballet so creatively and seriously. It was premièred in 1967 at Lincoln Center’s New York State Theater (now the David H. Koch Theater) New York State Theatre, the residence of the NYCB since its foundation. In 2008, it was renamed in honor of David Koch, who contributed to re-equipment and modernization of the theatre. Since 1996, Lincoln Center Festival has presented visionary international programming of dance, music, opera, and theater by artists from more than 50 countries. To date, the Festival has presented more than 137 premieres, with emphasis on contemporary artists and multidisciplinary works. Therefore, engaging Jewels in honor of Balanchine, the festival’s management discussed the opportunity to be the first to show the recent hit of the Bolshoi Ballet, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s effervescent production of The Taming of the Shrew. The festival will be held from 10 to 30 of July. Bolshoi Ballet’s performances are scheduled as a powerful final chord.
