Sadko by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov did not make any appearance on stage of the Bolshoi Theatre for a long time. How will it turn out to be this time – in Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production? Let us imagine we are in director’s shoes. His task is to stage an archetypal plot of hero’s journey, which needs to be live and organic for our modern comprehension. Charming adventurer, gusli musician (East Slavic multi-string plucked instrument) exists simultaneously in both worlds – real and a fantasy one. He magically gains wealth and loses it, descends into the sea in order to come back to the land again. What is the actual embodiment can this plot have at present times? We will find out answer to this question quite soon.

Not only had remarkable opera Dido and Aeneas never been performed at the Bolshoi Theatre, moreover, not a single production of its author had ever made an appearance on our billboards! That is why this premiere is so special for us – we introduce Henry Purcell to our composition “circle”!

About two years ago a concert version of fascinating Il Viaggio a Reims by Rossini was performed on the Bolshoi’s Historical stage. After several performances it became clear that we should include this opera in our repertoire. This idea came from the Music Director of the Bolshoi: Tugan Sokhiev conducted it in 2017, and now he also serves as a conductor. 20.11.2018

Il Barbiere di Siviglia — the most popular opera buffa by Gioacchino Rossini — returns to the Bolshoi. The new production of this piece will be staged on the New Stage by maestro Pierre Giorgio Morandi, a famous Italian conductor invited for the first time to the Bolshoi, and the director of our beloved Le Nozze di Figaro (to music by Mozart, 2015) Evgeny Pisarev, so this is the second time he’s turned to the story of the restless Figaro. 29.09.2018

A well-known opera by Giuseppe Verdi – Un Ballo in Maschera – returns to the repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre. This is a typical Verdi’s case: great music (some arias and ensembles have become world famous hits), increased passions, breathtaking plot which should be followed closely to keep up with. And a distinguishing mark (which appeared due to the censorship) – is a wandering place of action, which affects the spelling of the main character’s name and title. * Dial M for Murder is iconic film directed by Alfred Hitchcock (1954). 23.03.2018
The Bolshoi cooperates again with acknowledged choreographer, director of the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier. We used to show his famous Midsummer Night’s Dream, we perform his glorious Lady of the Camellias (both ballets born in the mid-1970s are among the masterpieces of the world ballet theatre). Still the third work gets out even from this series. For this time John Neumeier displays Anna Karenina (the title speaks for itself). This is the new production, a co-production with Hamburg ballet – which showed the world premiere of this piece last summer. *John Neumeier 15.02.2018

We are now fortunately familiar with Katie Mitchell: last season the Aix-en-Provence Opera Festival presented her two acclaimed productions on the New Stage of the Bolshoi - Written on Skin and Trauernacht. The new opera by British composer George Benjamin and the stage performance of J.S. Bach cantatas made a deep impression on public and received particular praise from the press. But that was just the beginning; the main objective was to include Mitchell’s staging in the repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre! And we succeeded: in cooperation with Aix-en-Provence we'll show the baroque opera Alcina in modern outfit! The premiere series of the performance will be held on 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 October.
